What is Enlighten Academy?Enlighten Academy is a Private School Program (PSP) which is an organization that helps support families with their homeschooling needs. A PSP files the Private School Affidavit (PSA) and operates as the administrator by maintaining your student's records, including cumulative (CUM) records, attendance, health records, grades, and high school transcripts. Enlighten Academy files the annual PSA covering your student in California.
-
Is a private school satellite program the same as a charter school? No, a PSP is a program offered through a private school, whereas charter schools are programs offered through the public school system with state-mandated requirements (e.g., immunizations and Cmmon Core curricula).
-

-
Are you an accredited school?Only schools or institutions can be accredited, and Enlighten Academy is not an institution. There are a lot of perks to not being an institution; it allows homeschool families the freedom to teach what you want, to use the curriculum you chose, to focus on learning instead of busywork, to choose whether your students are vaccinated, state-tested, or use a religious curriculum.
-

Who teaches my student? In a PSP, the parent is the teacher. If you choose the PSP + Curriculum plan, the classes are online and teachers teach each lesson. Your role is now to encourage your student, monitor your student's progress and understanding of the material, and to be the accountability they need to complete school each day.

What are the different learning styles?Traditional – Typically organized around complete curriculum packages, often arranged by school year, and might even be the same curriculum your local public or private school uses. Classical – The subject areas are interwoven into a chronological reading plan so that students are studying the various subject areas historically. In this way, students are equipped to understand the consequences over ideas over time. Lots of critical and logical thinking. · www.welltrainedmind.com · www.classicalconversations.com · www.classicalchristianhomeschooling.org Charlotte Mason – Based on the teachings of 19th century homeschooling mother, Charlotte Mason, this Christian homeschool style utilizes short periods of study, typically 15-20 minutes maximum for elementary students, and 45 minutes maximum for high schoolers. These short periods are coupled with nature walks, nature journaling, history portfolios, and lots of practice in observation, memorization, and narration. Reading plays a big role in CM homeschools, especially biographies, classics, and other “living books” (i.e., stories, with heroes, life lessons, and important socio-ethical implications). · www.amblesideonline.org · www.Charlottemasonhomeschooling.com · www.simplycharlottemason.com Montessori – Coined by early 20th century Italian physician and educator, Maria Montessori (1870-1952), this method grew out of her psychology work with special needs children. This method is a humanistic student-based approach utilizing free movement, large unstructured time blocks (up to 3 hours), multi-grade classes, and interest-based and individualized learning plans. Teachers instruct only indirectly, using a lot of manipulatives (tactile objects like tools and toys), and giving the student a range of options from which to choose. · www.amshq.org/Families/Why-Choose-Montessori · www.livingmontessorinow.com Eclectic – Typically child-directed, resourceful, and non-curriculum based. It has no built loyalties to a particular method and tends to treat curriculum options like a buffet instead of a set meal plan. Parent-teachers can sample from any combination of other homeschooling methods or resources. This model is the most flexible of all methods. · www.eclectichomeschool.org · www.eclectic-homeschool.com Unit Studies – Thematically related learning plans where students will study the same event of object from the perspective of each subject area. For example, students might study Egypt in Geography, the book of Exodus in Reading, “Out of Egypt” theories of human origins in Science, and pyramids and triangles in Math (Geometry-Trigonometry). · www.unitstudies.com · www.unitstudy.com · www.diyhomeschooler.com/freeunitstudies Unschooling – Based largely on the work of homeschooling pioneer John Holt. Unschooling is a free form learning model which is student-centered, unconventional, and individualistic. Learning plans and study projects focus largely on the student’s interests but with high priority on experimental, activity based, and learn as you go education. · www.unschoolrules.com · www.JohnHoltGWS.com Visual & Auditory Learning – Based on research that shows that 65% of students learn best when they "see" information and 30% learn best when they "hear" information. 95% of the population are a combination of both visual and auditory learning. Instead of reading long textbooks or listening/watching to long lectures, students learn by listening to the teacher while watching maps, graphs, pictures, and illustrations bring the concepts alive. Student engagment encreases, comprehension is greater, and students have better retention of what they learned. This is great for all students but especially great for students with Dyslexia. Micro-Learning – Students learn with short bite-sized chunks of information. The lessons are 5-10 minutes long with short quizzes that follow. This allows students to learn new information, process what they learned and apply it, before moving on to new information. This is great for students of all ages but especially great for students with ADHD.
